CASON FAMILY PHOTOS

The first thing that we would like to do is to provide a small part of the Cason family tree that is available on Ancestry.com.  If this stimulates your interest, you may want to trace your ancestry back many more generations, but our main intention with this blog is to provide photos and commentary starting with the generation of Charles L. Cason (1860-1912) and continuing in more or less chronological order (reverse) to the present generation.

  1. Charles “Cap” Cason is my great grandfather. He was the father of Ben Cason, grandfather of my dad Marvin. His wife, called Miss Ellie by Johnny Cason, & was from Muscogee, County Georgia and was the daughter of Reuben & Mary Tumlin. Reubin Tumlin was so upset by the damage done to his home in Atlanta by Sherman’s Army that he filled out a huge Complaint Form and mailed it into the Government! One of the complaints…….he said they stole his container of GOLD!

After the Civil War, Cap & Ellie moved their family to Jefferson County, Alabama so the men could find jobs in the foundrys and mills which were being opened. Cap worked in a foundry located close to the Fair Grounds in Birmingham. The city was planning the structure of a large statue to be shown at the World’s Fair. All the foundries worked on different parts of it and then put it all together at the Fairgrounds. We know Cap worked on it and Ben may have done so, too. Later Ben, who worked for U S Pipe & Foundry Co. was transferred to the site outside of Bessemer, Al and they soon were given lodging on St. Louis Avenue. I recall Cap and several men coming to visit Ben & Minnie Lou one afternoon……I went over, just to see them, and the only discussion I remember is that they discussed politics. And the visitors did not like President Roosevelt!

When he finished school, Marvin went to work in the foundry also, and enjoyed being a member of the Semi-Pro Baseball Team the company sponsored.

All the Cason girls greatly enjoyed watching the team play in the BaseBall Park the company had made for them to use!
